NCLEX STUDY TIP #4

This is Part 4 of our NCLEX STUDY TIPS Series

Continuing from NCLEX STUDY TIP #3, here goes...

As you're examining the answer choices, the first thing you must consciously remember is consider them based on the following three systems:

1. Client well-being
2. Nursing procedure/protoccol
3. Maslow's system of requirements

You can normally employ the above system to effectively pick which "action" to make first. This can make your decision to arrive at the correct answer much more safely and effectively.

Next, as mentioned in NCLEX Study Tip #3 , you will need to consider the physiological well-being of the patient  first. In a given situation, the patient may be obviously distressed, and one of your answer choices will presumably include quieting him/her down. Keep in mind that as per Maslow's Order of Necessities,  the patient's physiological needs should be prioritized over his/her psycho-social needs. This is the place the ABC System (airway, breathing, circulation) can then be considered.  BUT ..... here's the but...

The answer is NOT necessarily always  "AIRWAY".  Maslow's hierarchy of necessities will be to a great degree beneficial in answering exam questions, particularly with need questions. However it can also lead you in the wrong direction.

So what do you do now?

You see,  when utilizing the ABC system, you must always consciously remember that "Airway" is not necessarily always the right choice when the question does NOT give you an airway problem-solving. In the event that airway and breathing are NOT the issue of an NCLEX question, then look to "circulation" and check whether that applies. In that case, you have the right answer.
